Should the U.S. put tariffs on imported robots and industrial machinery?

On Oct. 28, 2026, President Trump signed a Section 232 proclamation agreeing with the Commerce Department that imports of robotics, industrial machinery and their parts threaten to impair national security. The proclamation set no tariffs. It directed Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to negotiate with trading partners and report back within 180 days, and said tariffs or other measures remain possible. Supporters cite U.S. reliance on foreign robotics; robotics industry group A3 has urged against tariffs on key components.
