Should a federal court be able to stop Alaska from certifying its Senate election?
On Oct 22 the Justice Department sued Alaska and its election officials in federal court, asking the court to block certification of the U.S. Senate race, pending an investigation, only if Sen. Dan S. Sullivan loses and would have won had all votes for a second candidate, Daniel J. Sullivan, gone to him. DOJ alleges Daniel J. Sullivan entered the race "with the intention of misleading" the senator's supporters, which he denies, and argues his name on the ballot will likely confuse voters. Mary Peltola's campaign, the DSCC, voting-rights groups and Sen. Lisa Murkowski oppose the suit, and critics argue the federal government has no power to block a state's certification. No hearing date has been set as of Oct 26, and Election Day is Nov 3.
